Josh Shimmin’s a pro, plain and simple. The hipster, Urban Outfitters-y Brooks student has already shot an entire feature — a Western named Blood and Water (watch the trailer here) — so 10-10-10 is the equivalent of chump change. He has the biggest crew (more than two dozen people), the fanciest cameras (rented out from Los Angeles), but, of course, the most problems starting out.

Josh Shimmin's "skeleton crew" shoots at the Santa Barbara Cemetery.

Shimmin’s script was penned by Kevin Torres of SBCC, and nearly all of it takes place in a Santa Barbara chapel. Which is a problem, if the Mission won’t let you shoot on their grounds and the Presidio kicks you out three hours ahead of schedule. So Josh trimmed his crew down to a 10-person skeleton crew, and the gang headed out with their trailer of gear to the next location on the list: a cemetery. There were plenty of jokes on the blasphemy and sacrilege of their situation; it’s not every day you get kicked out of a Catholic chapel only to sneak into a cemetery.

Thankfully, things only got better from there. That night, the group was able to rendezvous at Saint Raphael’s, where they got most of their chapel coverage. The next day brought another opportunity — this time, the chance to shoot at Mount Carmel. Now, with one day to go, Shimmin’s film is back on track, which means that he’s back where he wanted to be — on top of the game.
