The Santa Barbara Yoga Center (SBYC) is launching a new yoga class called Yoga for the People. It will be open to all levels and taught by a rotation of Yoga Center teachers to help those interested in embarking on a yoga-centered lifestyle. The push to offer up this “by donation” class is spearheaded by Jennifer Steinwurtzel, who recently joined the SBYC team and is hoping to expose the community to the various styles of yoga, without their having to dig deep into their pockets.

The center has recently undergone a transition in management and is experiencing a sense of renewal and revival that Steinwurtzel found motivating. “We want the Santa Barbara community to be a part of our community, and to get people into yoga and being good to one another,” Steinwurtzel said during an interview with The Independent. “A lot of people I meet say that they would like to do yoga but can’t afford it, so I wanted to start [them off] without making it a financial burden.”

The new program is expected to be ongoing throughout the year and drop-ins are encouraged. Steinwurtzel is all about making this yoga experience for newbies as fun and upbeat as possible. “This is a really good class for people who are new to yoga because it’s just once a week, so it is not making a huge commitment per se, [plus] you get exposed to all the different styles of yoga, so you can see what resonates with you,” Steinwurtzel said. This class is not looking to be a repetitive course, so expect to have a different yoga class and instructor every week. What’s there to lose but a lot of stress?
