Five People Hurt in Head-On Accident
Jaws of Life Used to Rescue Driver
Five people were hurt yesterday in a head-on collision at around 3:30 p.m. on Cathedral Oaks Road.
According to California Highway Patrol spokesperson Jeremy Wayland, a Mazda Tribute driven by a Carpinteria youth and carrying three other juvenile passengers was traveling westbound on Cathedral Oaks Road — just west of Camino Del Remedio — when it veered over the double yellow line. The Mazda’s left front corner struck a Jeep coming in the opposite direction, spinning both cars 180 degrees.
Paramedics and firefighters responded to the scene, and spent close to 45 minutes using the Jaws of Life to extricate the Mazda driver from the wreck. She was taken to Cottage Hospital with major injuries including a broken arm and dislocated hip.
The other passengers and Jeep driver were treated for minor and moderate injuries. Cathedral Oaks Road was closed for an hour and a half, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor, said Wayland.
