3 Reasons to Catch Rype.Events’ Big Debut

As any festival-goer will tell you, the convergence of music and art can make for some of the best — and wildest — parties. And it’s with this very idea in mind that Rype.Events was born. The young, Santa Barbara–based event-planning company, run by student and live-music aficionado Rachel Taylor, may just be starting out, but its vision is a strong one. Driven by Taylor’s own personal experiences at concerts and festivals, and informed by event-company creatives like The Do Lab, Rype is already showing promise — and pulling the kind of talent that suggests a bright future. This Saturday, November 26, Rype takes over Casa de la Raza (601 Montecito St.) at 8 p.m. for a full night of music, art, drinks, and dancing. 1. The Artists: Saturday’s event will kick off with a formal art-opening–style party for S.B. mixed-media talents Hannah Henderson, Miri Sunkel, and Paola Periera. Among the goods, Sunkel works with both traditional acrylics and canvas and obscure media like beeswax and wood, Periera blends graphic art with a more organic approach to painting, and Henderson dabbles in photography, painting, and mixed-media art.

2. The Tunes: On board for Saturday’s post-opening party is Santa Barbara native (and current Colorado dweller) James Burnell, aka DJ Skywalkerr. The rising deejay/producer churns out pulsating, bass-heavy beats in the vein of Skrillex but with a bit more grit. (See his remix of Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” for a taste.) He’ll also be joined by fellow drum and bass lovers Mico and DJ Mahadeva, as well as a dazzling light show by way of tanner Slaught’s OnSlaught Production. In short, it’s going to be a dance party, so plan accordingly.

3. The Start of Something Good: “I want to try and do something every two months,” said Taylor when asked about Rype’s future plans, “but it all depends how the first one goes.” And that doesn’t just mean more deejays; the young organizer has her eye set on all sorts of concert-meets-art-exhibit ideas. “I want to create a space where people can walk in and feel comfortable,” she went on to explain, “but I also want it to feel like a place where anything could happen.”
