Pure Bathing Culture
Pure Bathing Culture EP
On first listen, Portland’s Pure Bathing Culture (PBC) might sound like yet another name to lump into that whole ’60s girl-group resurgence. But a second (and third and fourth) spin through the band’s eponymous debut EP reveals something far greater than a mere throwback act. The brainchild of Vetiver members Daniel Hindman and Sarah Versprille, PBC makes the kind of breezy, sparkling pop that only gets better with age. For their EP, the pair mixes smooth ’80s-inspired synths with Versprille’s high and lilting vocals and Hindman’s reverb-laden guitar hooks. Standout track “Lucky One” is an infectiously upbeat, island-tinged number, while “Silver Shore’s Lake” manages to channel Cyndi Lauper with its languid, yacht-rock–channeling guitar tones. Our only gripe with PBC’s debut: We wish it were longer.
