Hot Chip
In Our Heads
Hot Chip’s new album, In Our Heads, plays out like a jubilant disco-funk house party. As the band’s fifth effort, In Our Heads lives up to expectations with its fun-loving style but ventures down some risk-taking paths. The breakdown groove of “Look at Where We Are” verges into R&B, while “Now There Is Nothing” is reminiscent of Queen’s biggest rock ballads. But Hot Chip’s playful nature isn’t a youthful obliviousness so much as an unpretentious exploration of music making. The band has always possessed the ability to be both lighthearted and reflective, indulgent and compassionate, and closing track “Always Been Your Love” perfectly occupies both modes with its pleasant sing-along. It’s joyous, it’s somber, and it’s exactly why we fell in love with Hot Chip to begin with.
