I was not familiar with Leon Litwack and appreciate the article.

Being from Lancaster Pennsylvania, I, by accident, decades ago visited the grave of Thaddeus Stevens, across from my grandmother’s apartment. Lancaster was also the home of President James Buchanan, who preceded Lincoln.

Also, I would like to mention the short story Going to Meet the Man on a lynching from a white child’s point of view written by James Baldwin, who had the double burden of being gay and black. This should be required reading in high school.
