Quacked Crossing
Riffing on the joyful news that our town saved a duck family from an early grave.
How does a duck walk ‘cross the road
and not get flattened like the toad?
She brings ducklings to catch the eye
of each and every passer-by
and help declare, “We’re crossing here!”
Then watches for the happy tear
of a sad soul at the stoplight,
a bleeding heart who feels her plight,
Then waddles under a stopped car
a spot of shade that’s not too far,
and waits to hear, “Code red. Code red!
If this car moves those ducks are dead!”
Then waits patiently for a ride
to safety on the other side –
Staged traffic jams and 9-1-1:
tools cute ducks use to have fun.
