Public Input Wanted on Illegal Fishing Method

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is asking for public input on the illegal method of fishing known as “snagging” in state waters.

Snagging, also known as foul hooking, occurs when an angler catches a fish using hooks imbedded outside of the mouth. This can occur either intentionally or accidentally, while using various types of fishing gear and techniques. Fish caught by this method are often injured or killed in the process.

Anglers in California may not legally keep snagged fish. Current angling regulations include seasonal closures and gear restrictions designed to reduce the incidence of snagging.

CDFW would like to hear comments, concerns and information on waters where snagging is taking place, as well as ideas for reducing the occurrence of snagging. Please submit comments by email to snaggingcomments@wildlife.ca.gov.
