If anything good comes out of the maddening, bogus “debate” about climate change, perhaps it will be that Republicans are finally identified as the party of stupid. While this is certainly not the only such indicator, listening to an idiot like Senator Inhofe pontificate about global warming being a huge hoax would be laughable if it weren’t so tragic given his prominent role in the Senate regarding environmental issues.

Of course, he’s not alone, but more than that, the Republican leadership must bear responsibility for putting him in this position. Regarding the lunacy of the climate deniers, insisting that the current data is not conclusive, I urge you to see the movie, now playing in Santa Barbara, Merchants of Doubt. I think it is the perfect companion to An Inconvenient Truth, which presented the science, and this second one cuts through the propaganda attempting to obfuscate that science. Merchants presents a brilliant history of how corporate America has misled the public and the politicians for over 50 years, beginning with the debate about tobacco.

For Senator Inhofe, insisting on the inconclusive nature of the climate change data, I would like to suggest he consider this scenario: A car has a bomb attached with a remote detonator that uses a battery that has been selected from a group of 100 batteries, three of which are defective. Wouldn’t you consider 97 percent a satisfactory level of certainty to conclude that you would be well advised not to get into that car?
