This past week, registered voters in Santa Barbara County received their information guides and those who vote by mail got their ballots in the mail for an election that doesn’t officially transpire until June 8. As usual, the stakes are high, the choices stark, and the fate of the universe hangs in the balance.

On May 13, The Independent is publishing three endorsements. On May 20, we published the rest, which are now all compiled here. Happy voting!

District Attorney: Joyce Dudley

Voters confront a choice between two accomplished, compelling, yet troubling candidates in the race for District Attorney — Joyce Dudley and Josh Lynn — both successful and charismatic career prosecutors.

* Measure J, City of Carpinteria: NO

We urge you to vote down the Venoco-sponsored oil drilling initiative.

* 35th State Assembly District Democratic Party Nomination: DAS WILLIAMS

The Independent endorses the Santa Barbara City Councilman for the Democratic Party ticket.

* 2nd District Supervisor, Santa Barbara County: JANET WOLF

The Independent supports the incumbent, who has shined as a supervisor.

County Treasurer-Tax Collector: Harry Hagen

Of the three candidates running for County Treasurer-Tax Collector, there’s only one person remotely qualified for the post: Harry Hagen.

Prop. 13: Yes – Property Tax Exemption on Seismic Retrofits

Prop. 14: No – Top Two Vote-Getters ‘Open’ Primary

Prop 15: No – Allows Public Financing for Candidates, Secretary of State

Prop 16: No – Two-thirds Vote Requirement for Local Providers

Prop 17: No – Auto Insurance Continuous Policy Driver Rate Change

Measure K: Yes – Maintain Santa Barbara County Bed Tax

Measure L: Yes – Hope School District Bond Extension
