Your notion of living in bunkers through a fire is interesting. However, safe from the fire, what does one do for air to breathe? The smoke is full of particulates. Filters and facemasks can only work so well and must be changed to avoid clogging.

Secondly, the inside of structures can get extremely hot when surrounded by a raging firestorm. Finally, I've read that a wildfire can consume essentially all the available oxygen and that, as a result, many animals die not from the flames but from suffocation.

If I were to build a stucco shelter, what would I need to do to keep the temperature bearable and to sustain breathing for hours? How is the Westmont gym is outfitted to guarantee up to 1000 people breathable air, and for how long?

When a cost estimate is given, such as $6.8M, how is the figure arrived at? What expenses are included? How are wages calculated?

Does anyone know what time the evening concert will start?

Thanks for pointing this out, but why don't they appear on the NewsFlash page, which is where many of us go to directlyt?

I got a call from a friend who works evenings and lives on the south side of Sycamore Canyon, on 192 west of Chelham Way. The deputy at the road block would not let him pass, even though it is clear from the map that the mandatory evaluation order is only north of Sycamore Canyon. He said that there was no fire burn on the south side, and the conditions are not different from normal. He had the same problem after the fire before they let residents return. The creek may overflow later, but the homes are not in danger, he said. Somebody should provide the sheriff's deputies more detailed information.

On Evacuation Warning Issued for Parts of Eastside

Posted on November 25 at 10:21 p.m.

It would be nice if the Independent put the time on their stories.
At 9:15, the City posted a map on its web site:
http://www.santabarbaraca.gov/Resident/S...
The direct link is
http://www.santabarbaraca.gov/Documents/...
It is also mentioned on their flood preparation page,
http://www.santabarbaraca.gov/Resident/S...
but that link is to an earlier map, not now available.
I don't see one yet on the county web site:
http://www.countyofsb.org/ceo/press.aspx...

On Evacuation Warning Issued for Parts of Eastside

Posted on November 25 at 10 p.m.

As of 9pm, there were road blocks established in some areas, such as on Sycamore Canyon Rd at Chelham Way, so that even people in homes on the south side of Sycamore Canyon, not in the burn area, cannot get to their homes. (They did the same thing after the fire.) There is a press release indicating the areas blocked out by the order:

On Call Center Activated for Rain Questions

Posted on November 25 at 9:57 p.m.

There is a press release on the county web site that details the streets where the order applies.
http://www.countyofsb.org/ceo/press.aspx...
I don't see it here on the Independent site. The document direct link to the document is:

On Rain-Related Evacuations Begin

Posted on November 25 at 5:53 p.m.

As of 5:45pm, there is not yet any press release or announcement on the county site:
http://www.countyofsb.org/ceo/press.aspx... .
Similarly, there is also nothing on the City site:
http://www.santabarbaraca.gov/Resident/O...
http://www.santabarbaraca.gov/Resident/S...

Exactly what this Evacuation Order means for many of us is unclear.

Every year, the Western U.S. suffers these devastating fires, often from human causes, yet we seem to be relying on good behavior to avoid them. Could we do better? We learned during the Tea Fire that the State provides data from a satellite called MODIS that can locate thermal anomalies/fire, to within about 1/4-mile. (See the Incident Map at
http://www.fire.ca.gov/index_incidents_T....)
According to the wikipedia, it is in polar orbit and images the entire earth every 1-2 days. Other satellites monitor visible light. So the question is whether MODIS or some other satellite could have picked up the bonfire on Wednesday night or Thursday morning and warned authorities that someone had encroached on the no-fire zone. We know that our military continuously monitors certain areas of the earth for a missile launch, the detection of which is similar to identifying a fire. Can NOAA and NASA develop an early warning system to help prevent disasters such as these?
