Rudy Socha, who makes the false allegation (above) that 'fishing boats' are doing the tagging we once did is false.

Rudy works for the aquaria trade/market and is charged with squelching and distorting the record on issues touching upon the aquarium/gift store trade to which he is attached.

The gill netters are being payed to fish for white sharks in Southern California where protections are weaker than in Monterey Bay region where I have been conducting white shark research in the wild since 1990.

On Great Whites on Display

Posted on August 25 at 6:45 p.m.

The squid was discovered by a research team with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation (PSRF) which was over Monterey Bay (marine canyon) while conducting a routine shark survey when they spotted the specimen drifting at the down wind end of a slick attended by high active seabirds..

It was recovered and immediately recognized as an Architeuthis by expedition leader Sean R. Van Sommeran who immediately reported the find and then delivered it to NOAA scientist John Field after relaying the information via UCSC veterinarians Guy Oliver and Dave Casper.

Images of the recovery can be viewed at the link provided below:

We are pleased that the specimen we are donating to Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, congratulations to the experts who have been able to optimize this opportunity and to young Marshall Payat who also participated.

Cheers,
S.

On What’s 30 Feet Long with Eight Legs, a Big Beak, and a Life of Mystery?

Why no mention of the basking sharks?
Worlds second largest species of shark, a harmless plankton feeder this huge shark was wiped out and declared commercially extinct by 1955. Once counted by government aerial surveys in the thousands they are to this day rare and endangered. The fishery wasnt closed until year 2000, more of a after thought of 'duck' of the issue.

Basking sharks should be a protected species in California.
