Everyone is so concerned with trying to be part of her "in list" that they are turning a blind eye to what she has done to this community. From the day she purchased the old Bacon estate Montecito was irrefutably changed. Carloads of star-seekers, a sight not seen before in Montecito, arrived due to the national publicity of her purchase price.
Everyone waited with baited breath to see what Oprah would do to become part of the community. She made an appearance at a sold out Girls Inc luncheon, and hasn't given back anything to the community since then. She has taken, however, and taken a lot.
Subsequent to that Girl's Inc. luncheon and connections she made locally, she pulled tremendous donor dollars out of the Santa Barbara community for her school project in Africa. Not that it isn't a very worthy cause, but she has sucked up so much of the available donor money for Santa Barbara that a number of local charities are actual suffering.
Then there was her Legonds Ball. I don't dispute her ability to throw a party if she wants, but her unique celebrity along with that of her WELL PUBLICIZED guest list brought the paparazzi out in force. The helicopters which hover 500 feet off the ground ALL day circling her property (including many others near by) are so loud that they can be heard inside a home with all the windows and doors shut. Not a really comfortable thought in the middle of the summer with no air conditioning!
Now this party. Close to 2000 people, publicized nationally in advance, in a rural residential area with narrow tiny roads. The poor neighbors weren't even notified that they would be prohibited from driving on their very own street until a sign was posted lterally the night before. The music was so loud (Stevie Wonder is great but not when you are trying to put your baby down for a nap) that it was heard from one end of Montecito to the other. The sound checks went on from early morning all day disrupting people's lives.
So...good for Oprah, she threw a great party, made lots of money for Mr. Obama, and had a wonderful time. Too bad she cares so little for her neighbors and the community of Montecito. To those whom much is given, much is expected. Oprah, we expected more from you! Like curtisy and consideration.
