The Santa Barbara Association of Realtors objected to a proposal
to require sewage-line inspections whenever property is sold in the
city. While the city’s sewage mains are well maintained, according
to the Public Works Department, the lateral lines leading into the
mains from private property are not. Leaks and roots in the sewage
laterals are causing raw sewage to be flushed down streets and into
storm drains during heavy rain. Point-of-sale checks – along with
checks during development and repairs as problems are discovered by
sewage main workers – were favored by the dozen other organizations
that participated in workshops to solve the problem. Realtors,
however, said requiring sewage-line inspections before property
sales would stall the sales’ process.
