On the eve of a congressional vote on student loan program cuts,
some UCSB students gathered in a peaceful action echoed on campuses
across the country. UCSB student activists said they had been
strategizing for several months, in concert with the University of
California Students Association and the United States Student
Association, to prevent increases in interest for federal student
loans, as well as increases in student fees at the state level.
They were at least partially successful: Gov. Schwarzenegger agreed
to fix student loan interest rates.
