A settlement offer proposed by the Santa Barbara Air Pollution
Control District (APCD) regarding the unsafe release of asbestos
that occurred last August during building renovations on the campus
of Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) was approved recently by
SBCC’s board of directors; the specifics of the settlement and fine
agreement were undisclosed, though sources believe them to be
$2,500. According to APCD director Terry Dressler, the disturbance
of asbestos was sufficiently remedied by SBCC, mitigating exposure
to workers and students. Dressler added that as part of the
settlement and penalty agreement SBCC was required to submit a
remediation plan for approval by APCD, ensuring no similar asbestos
violations would occur during future renovations.
