Incumbent Sheriff Jim Anderson managed to snag the key political
endorsement of the hotly contested sheriff’s race, that of the
Deputy Sheriff’s Association. The DSA announced only that Anderson
won more votes than any of the other three candidates running for
the post, but declined to state exactly how many votes each of the
candidates received. With a four-way race, the union decided early
on to relax bylaws requiring candidates to win endorsement by an
actual majority of votes cast. The race pits Anderson the incumbent
against his predecessor, former Sheriff Jim Thomas, Lompoc Mayor
Bill Brown, and Sheriff’s Lt. Butch Arnoldi. With the endorsement,
the DSA also pledged to give Anderson’s campaign $25,000. Four
years ago the DSA gave Anderson $50,000.
