The color-coded national security index flashed bright orange
earlier this week when a death threat toward President Bush was
found in the hull of a banana boat unloading at the Port of Hueneme
near Oxnard. The massive 135-acre port went into immediate lockdown
Monday afternoon after a crude note was found written on a beam in
the bowels of the Panamanian-based vessel Wild Lotus. The message –
scrawled in black magic marker – read, “Nitro + glycerin a gift for
G.W. Bush and his Jewish gang.” The port was closed for several
hours while local, state, and federal agencies scoured the harbor,
boats, and ocean floor for explosives; none were found. The Port of
Hueneme is the only deepwater harbor between San Francisco and Los
Angeles, and one of the country’s most used seaports for citrus
export and automobile and banana imports.
