Pearl Jam, with Sonic Youth supporting, returns to the Santa
Barbara Bowl tonight, July 13. If their last appearance a couple
years back is any indication — you remember, that last-minute
Tuesday night benefit show for one of the Ramones whenChris
Cornell, John Frusciante, Jack Johnson, and other über stars joined
Eddie Vedder and his crew onstage — the concert will go down as one
of the year’s highlights. Many tried in vain to get tickets for the
show, so we decided to ask a Pearl Jam fan — namely Indy
staffer Shannon Kelley Gould — about her travails.
Why do you want to go so badly? I was never a
huge Pearl Jam fan, although I always liked their music. But I went
to the last show here, and it was amazing, one of the best shows
I’ve ever seen. It was a fluke that I wound up going, but I loved
it. I was blown away.
How have you tried to get tickets? I went to
the Bowl the day they went on sale. I called Ticketmaster that day.
I went to Craigslist. I cornered my inside connection at the paper
and tried to bleed some information out of him, which was
unsuccessful. The tickets on Craigslist were a couple hundy, which
is a little out of range. We’re hoping scalpers will get desperate
as the show draws closer.
What’s your plan if you don’t go? I will be
drinking in my yard [near the Bowl] and praying for good acoustic,
atmospheric conditions, which is fog.
