About 70 supporters of gay rights rallied at the Santa Barbara Courthouse on 10/27 against Proposition 8, a ballot measure that would amend the California State Constitution to limit marriages to heterosexual couples only. U.S. Representative Lois Capps and Mayor Marty Blum were among the speakers at the event who discouraged voters from supporting Prop. 8 and, in their words, writing discrimination into state law. Lois Capps held a town-hall style meeting on 10/28 at Toyota of Santa Barbara after she was invited to speak by general manager Mike Caldwell about the ailing economy and how it is affecting the auto industry. Capps focused on the election, the national economic crisis, and how consumer confidence affects the timeline of economic recovery. The meeting was called to give Toyota employees the opportunity to talk directly with Capps. (/capps1030)
