Law and Disorder 10-30

Russell Sturges, a 35-year-old Santa Barbara County resident, died in a single-car collision on 10/26 in Goleta, on Calle Real near Baker Lane. The Sheriff’s Department is still investigating what caused his SUV to veer off the road and hit a tree. A 16-year-old passenger escaped unharmed.

Despite continuing from the evening of 10/27 to the wee hours of 10/28, a manhunt on Santa Barbara’s Eastside for 34-year-old Daniel Aguilar had not, as of press time, found him. Aguilar allegedly pulled a gun on two unarmed probation officers performing a routine search at his home at the Flamingo Mobile Home Park at 214 S. Canada St. Police employed a SWAT team, K-9 units, and a helicopter in searching for Aguilar. (/manhunt1030)

On 10/26, Santa Barbara sheriff’s deputies arrested a 14-year-old Carpinteria High School student for allegedly threatening to kill fellow students and a teacher. According to a report from Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Drew Sugars, the boy felt bullied by the targeted students and the teacher. One of the potential victims told deputies the boy planned to bring a gun to school. As of 10/27, the boy was still in custody at Juvenile Hall.

The Santa Barbara Police Department announced on 10/23 that it has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the California Department of Alcohol Beverage Control in order to fund youth-oriented substance abuse prevention programs. Programs that stand to benefit include the minor decoy program, in which undercover minors identify stores willing to sell booze to them. (/police1030)
