Despite a push by the Obama administration to double production of renewable energy in the next three years, Carpinteria-based Clipper Windpower recently cut 90 employees, most of whom work at the company’s Iowa manufacturing plant. The dismal economy and credit situations were blamed for the layoffs. The company’s production is reportedly down 20 percent from 2008.


After sitting empty for four years, the 24-hour Hot Spots coffee shop is reportedly reopening at its former location at 36 State Street. Owner Eric Hamor closed to accommodate the proposed La Entrada time-share condo village, which has not yet materialized. As it did previously, the cafe will also function as a visitor information center.


The San Ysidro Ranch was this week named “America’s Best Hotel” by a Forbes magazine panel that included author and pundit Arianna Huffington. The 41-cottage ranch is just one of several area properties owned by Santa Barbara resident and famed Beanie Baby mogul Ty Warner.
