Students activists at UCSB assembled below Storke Tower on 3/31, Cesar Ch¡vez Day, to protest the university’s policy of celebrating the holiday during spring break. Pointing out that urban school districts around the state and most California State Universities honor the holiday on its official date, these students are working with Associated Students officers to make the University of California Regents change their policy. On 3/25, UC students gathered outside the courthouse to present Rep. Lois Capps with a green cape, recognizing her heroic leadership in working to solve climate change. The students were traveling the state in an attempt to generate support for a bill that would make California’s landmark global warming standard on emissions a national standard. (/enviro42)

Construction will begin in August 2009 for on UCSB’s new high-tech ocean science education building, the school announced on 3/25. The facility will house interactive exhibits as well as the Outreach Center for Teaching Ocean Science, a tool designed to expand science education for schoolchildren. Funding comes mostly from philanthropic sources. A tentative completion date of spring 2011 has been set.
