Rescuers on Friday worked to reach a vehicle that plunged over the side of the 154, falling 300 feet and killing its driver, George Glisson,

Paso Robles resident George Glisson, 60, died on Friday evening after he lost control of the Ford F-250 he was driving and plunged 300 feet down the side of Highway 154.

It took rescuers more than an hour to free the driver from the wreckage. According to witnesses, Glisson was traveling eastbound between 55 and 60 miles per hour just east of Whitaker’s Curve, near Windy Gap, when he lost control and fell off the side of the road. The vehicle came to rest on its roof in a creek bed. Glisson was wearing his seatbelt.

One dog died at the scene while another was taken to a veterinary hospital for moderate injuries. A total of 30 rescuers – including a helicopter and search and rescue team members – worked more than five hours on the mission.
