A whaling enterprise of a different sort gets underway this winter. Gray Whales Count is looking for prospective volunteers to count the migratory creatures and their calves as they pass through the Santa Barbara Channel on their annual northerly journey from Mexico to Alaska.

Community members interested in participating in the count are invited to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s Farrand Hall, Thursday, January 14, 7 p.m., for an informational meeting. The museum is located at 2559 Puesta del Sol Road.

A site meeting takes place at Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve, which lies just west of the UCSB campus and is the vantage point from which the whales will be counted, on Sunday, January 17, at 5 p.m. at the reserve’s Cliff House. (Carpooling is requested.)
