Drive to the Sand?
I attended Stand in the Sand: A Gathering for the Gulf at West Beach but was disappointed that I heard no real appeal for conservation, only for “alternative fuels” or “alternative energy.” As long as people in the USA continue to set the global standard by driving private vehicles everywhere, turning the air conditioning up, and eating from the thousand-mile food chain, alternatives will not cut it! Do the math yourself because everyone who has done it honestly cannot see how wind and sun power can supply us with anything near what is used in the USA; and developing nations aspire to live like US.
Conservation is the only real solution: to use less through a change in lifestyle. It would be a good start if people at a demonstration like “Stand in the Sand” would bicycle or bus to get there. They asked for hands and most drove their own cars! Be the change you want to see, as Gandhi said.—Lane Anderson
