Recent reports have indicated that BP is in (and may well win) a dispute with government officials regarding relieving pressure from the new cap. Conveniently, this will protect British Petroleum’s vested interest by not allowing a true measurement to be taken of the actual leakage volume in order to determine the extent of their liability.

I am dumbfounded that BP has any say in the matter, as to whether or not the new cap should be relieved and oil pumped to the surface. This would prevent pressure build-up and a possible worsening of this catastrophe, i.e. a leak from the ocean floor, which would be much more difficult to arrest than the leak from the broken wellhead.

BP’s “vested interest” should hold no influence on our government whatsoever. BP has already erred so heinously that to give them an opportunity to cover up the true flow amount by not relieving the cap is unconscionable.

If this wound gets worse because we fail to do something that we knew in advance could have prevented it, we as a nation will have no one to blame but ourselves.

Please, make some noise! Tell them to make BP relieve the cap! Write or call your representatives now!—Jim Watson, Jr., S.B.
