Mattei's Tavern.
Jen Villa

The County Historic Landmarks Advisory Commission made a resolution on 9/13 to designate Mattei’s Tavern—built in 1886 on the edge of Los Olivos—a historic landmark. The decision, which must be ratified by the Board of Supervisors within 90 days, comes after years of discussion to make the site a landmark, but before a project that owner Charles Banks proposed was approved. The latest iteration includes a 64-room cottage-style hotel, conference room and spa, swimming pool, and some alterations to the tavern and five associated cottages. Most of the development doesn’t take place on the same lot as the historic structures, and some of the modification work Banks does plan to do on the historic structures are only on newer additions. The project is scheduled to go in front of the Planning Commission in October.
