Saba Tewolde

On Monday, November 14, at 6 p.m., Ethiopian-born Saba Tewolde will host an Ethiopian cooking class at a private home on the Mesa.

Tewolde, who occasionally has catered lunches here at The Independent, came to the United States just after 9/11, when she left her family behind in Ethiopia. Three years ago, she founded the nonprofit organization Taste of Hope in order to help “her people” in Ethiopia; a percentage of the proceeds from the cooking class will go to Taste of Hope, which are currently supporting 100 blind children in Ethiopia.

The self-trained chef, who learned her best tricks from her grandmother, owned a restaurant in Ethiopia before coming to the States, where she started Lalibela Catering.

Monday’s cooking class will introduce particpants to authentic Ethiopian cuisine, as Tewolde teaches the essentials of making exotic meals like alicha (vegetable curry), doro we’t (chicken stew), yemisir alich’a (mild split lentil sauce), and ayib (potted cheese). You will also get the opportunity to roast and grind your own coffee.

The cooking class is $55 for members of Santa Barbara Culinary Arts and $65 for guests. RSVP as soon as possible by calling (805) 895-6750.
