Casa Dolores Opens “Same Clay, DIfferent Mold” Exhibit
Drawing on the Mexican proverb “Todos estamos hechos del mismo barro, pero no del mismo molde” (or “We’re all made of the same clay, but not from the same mold”), the new three-gallery exhibition features women and their many figures, artistic creations, and functions in society through a variety of mediums. More traditional images like those of the Virgin of Guadalupe and peasant women are juxtaposed with atypical ones: calendar girls, mermaids, curanderas (healers), and brujas (witches). Two side galleries investigate the functional crafts women make (textiles, ceramics) in scenic household settings as well as the many roles women in Mexican society have carried out.
Several pieces made by beloved Oaxacan folk artist Josefina Aguilar are on-loan for this exhibition from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Morrison of Santa Barbara. Four of these pieces are “Friditas,” miniature clay sculptures of Frida Kahlo paintings, who is also the muse for Casa Dolores’ summer fundraiser “A Tribute to Frida Kahlo: A Surrealist Dinner,” which is being held in conjunction with the exhibit. The exhibition runs from June 2 – September 1, 2012.
During the opening reception of the exhibit, guests will enjoy light snacks, refreshments, and music, and will have the opportunity to win raffle prizes that have been donated by local businesses such as The Santa Barbara International Film Festival and Oreana Winery. The event is free.
