Minnesota Arboretum Director Receives National Award of Merit

Schneider Honored by American Public Garden Association

Ed Schneider

Chanhassen, MN—Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Director, Edward Schneider, Ph d., was recently presented a national Award of Merit for his distinguished public garden leadership by the American Public Garden Association (APGA) at their annual meeting and conference in Phoenix, AZ. This award recognizes distinctive service in public horticulture and excellent leadership at one or more public gardens. Schneider was also cited for his extensive research on water lilies and collaborative publications on plants.

Schneider was named Director of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in summer, 2010 following a national search. Previously, he served as Chief Executive at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden for 18 years. In addition to the APGA, Schneider was recognized for his national leadership with the Botanical Society of America and the American Association of Museums; and his contributions to the Center for Plant Conservation. At the Arboretum, Schneider has expanded horticultural research programs, particularly in the area of rare and endangered plant species, such as the dwarf trout lily and native orchids. Under his leadership, Schneider has been instrumental in shaping a vision for future growth and development that will make the Arboretum a top northern garden and attraction.

“I am extremely honored to receive this award, “stated Schneider, “and would like to share this recognition with the many who have mentored me along the way. Also, I want to recognize the dedicated staff, board trustees and volunteers at the Arboretum and Botanic Garden for their work and support.”

His nomination was submitted by Dr. Peter Raven, president emeritus of Missouri Botanic Garden, with the award presented by Harry Jongerden, director of the VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver.
