Santa Barbara residents raise $200,000 for cancer research
Local Santa Barbara residents Dr. Ken and Shirley Waxman along with family and friends form TEAM STEPHANIE to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)
More than 60 people have joined TEAM STEPHANIE to raise $200,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The money will support research to further our progress towards finding a cure for blood cancer. TEAM STEPHANIE will also be training to run (or walk) the Nike Women’s Marathon on October 20, 2013 in San Francisco.
In 2012, Stephanie Waxman, daughter of Dr. Ken and Shirley Waxman, was diagnosed with an advanced stage of an aggressive form of leukemia with only a one in five chance of survival. Like most blood cancers, Stephanie’s form of leukemia cannot be prevented or screened. Patients rely on available treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow transplants to survive their disease.
Today marks the one-year anniversary of Stephanie’s bone marrow transplant, and after an extremely difficult year, she is healthy again, even back to work part-time. She says, “I feel so grateful to my friends and family and the Santa Barbara community for all of the love and support this past year. My goal now is to raise as much money as possible so that we can finally find a cure for blood cancers. I don’t want anyone else to go through what I’ve been through the past year, and I don’t want to lose anyone else to this disease. We are so close to a cure.”
