UCs Get Record Admissions Requests

Nearly 5 percent more graduating high school students were offered admission to the University of California — 86,865 in all — for fall 2014 over last year. The number is a record high for UC and includes typically underrepresented groups, such as Latinos and those who are first in their families to attend college. Latino students were offered admission at a higher rate than white students for the first time in UC’s history, with Latino admissions at 28.8 percent and white admissions at 26.8 percent. Students from low-income families composed 37.4 percent of admissions, and 20.9 percent attended low-performing high schools. Locally, UC Santa Barbara saw a large increase in applicants, which resulted in a drop of 8 percentage points in the admittance rate: 36 percent this year compared to 44 percent last year.
