My magnificent memories of Milpas! In those days of yore of 1974, my German husband and I, his English wife, after a three-week drive around California, ended up in Santa Barbara. Directed to a small Milpas beach motel by an already full Motel 6, we stayed overnight — and next day ended up buying the business. The owners, after receiving their 1969 Oil Spill compensation, wanted out. We wanted in! And thus began a saga, which I wrote about in my fourth book, The Crimson Cloak — A Family’s Flight from Communism to Freedom in California

Incidentally, we lived many years on Milpas Street. Our three sons attended and walked to the local schools, all in the vicinity of an ungentrified Milpas.
