The reopening of the southbound on- and off-ramps at Los Carneros Road — closed since last February for construction — has been pushed back to the end of March, the City of Goleta announced on Friday, citing safety concerns. The ramps were originally slated to reopen this month, and officials considered opening up part of the on-ramp but decided to wait. “We recognize the inconvenience this has caused to many, but the ultimate goal is to provide a safe environment for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians,” a city representative stated.

The overhaul at that site involves replacing the bridge — the material for which was outdated — that runs over the nearby railroad tracks. During construction, the freeway overpass has stayed open but lanes in each direction were reduced. When the ramps reopen, a dedicated right-turn lane for getting onto the on-ramp is meant to alleviate traffic. Bike lanes and a sidewalk will also round out the upgrades.
