A 60-year-old man was hit and killed by an Amtrak passenger train just west of Milpas Street on Wednesday afternoon at about 12:40 p.m. It appears as though the man, known to police as a transient, laid down on the tracks and committed suicide, according to police spokesperson Sgt. Riley Harwood.

The train, which was heading north, stopped for a short time. The police department and Coroner’s Office personnel responded to the scene. The police department is investigating the case, and the Coroner will release the man’s identity once his next of kin are found and notified.
