[From County JIC release] Fire investigators have confirmed the Jesusita fire origin is adjacent to the Jesusita Trail, commonly accessed from the San Roque or Tunnel Road areas.
The fire cause appears related to the use of power tool equipment involved in vegetation clearance. Fire investigators are requesting public assistance with identification of the person or persons engaged in vegetation clearance on Monday, May 4th, and Tuesday, May 5th, 2009. The unidentified persons are known to have been on the trail between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on both days.
Please call the Santa Barbara County Tip Line at 805-686-5061 or contact investigators by email at sbctip@sbcfire.com with information regarding these individuals.

i think the implication is that the vegetation removal was not for the purpose of defensible space but for other less noble reasons

Are you implying Marijuana ("for medicinal purposes only") growers?
I hope there is no relationship to the trail clearing group. Seems they mean to improve hiking (& mountain biking?) in the area:

Jesusita Fire
We had scheduled to do trail maintenance on Jesusita this afternoon until this fire broke out."
Would be nice to have more maintained foothill hiking trails, especially in Goleta, say along the forest boundary from 154 to Refugio.

When I read the article, I was also thinking about one of the various volunteer trail maintenance groups. I believe the Montecito Trails group also contracts/pays groups to do maintenance but Jesusita is a bit out of their area of interest.
Can't imagine pot growers near Jesusita, at least the serious kind, not remote enough?

"Fire officials said someone, or possibly a group of people, was clearing vegetation on what appeared to be private land near the trail around the time the fire erupted Tuesday. "

If true, then probably not a trail crew.

The County should implement a new requirement that any time a power tool is used in a high fire hazard area, a portable fire extinguisher must be on hand. This would have done the trick for the Zaca fire too.

Wouldn't it be ironic if authorized trail maintenance personnel were held accountable for damages in the Jesusita fire, when only six months earlier, ten partying college students who set a bonfire during sundowner conditions in an illegal area were found "not accountable" for the Tea fre?

eliaison: authorized trail personnel using power tools in the thick brush? Seems an oxymoron. Nothing like that was authorized.

Interesting to see the outcome! Will this person be harshly punished while the Tea fire starters get off with a slap on the wrist?? And oh boy, hope it wasn't a mexican cause he'll be hung!!
