Predictions that the Zaca Fire was nearing its end went up in smoke on 7/29, as the nearly month-old inferno roared back to life along its eastern edge – near McKinley Peak and San Rafael Mountain – sending fumes and ash throughout the City of Santa Barbara. Officials had estimated the fire’s containment date to be sometime this week, but the resurgence pushed that date back to 9/7. At press time, the fire has scorched more than 36,000 acres. Firefighting crews number more than 1,040.
