Michael Mehas – whose novel, Stolen Boy, is based on the 2000 kidnapping and murder of Nicholas Markowitz in Santa Barbara – has refused to respond to the District Attorney’s subpoena of his interviews with witnesses. Mehas’s access to confidential evidence collected by law enforcement resulted in the removal from the case of Deputy D.A. Ron Zonen, a ruling that is currently under appeal to the California Supreme Court. The judge in accused murderer Jesse James Hollywood’s criminal case said he will wait to rule on the subpoena following the Supreme Court’s decision.
