The Future Is Now

I could start this by giving you some terrifying facts about polar bears drowning in the Atlantic Ocean. Or I could present some numbers of the temperature increase on Earth. Or I could draw a diagram to show you how much carbon dioxide will be present in the atmosphere in 50 years. But Al Gore already did that.

The problem is not that nobody realizes the seriousness of global warming. The problem is that we don’t make enough effort to fight it. Cars are wonderful things so why should we have to sacrifice our convenient everyday life for the next generations? Who cares about tomorrow when today is so much fun, right?

The thing is that the choices we make today affect the future. If we don’t do something today, we might regret it later on. And that is a risk we cannot afford to take. For example, imagine that we forget about Al Gore, Greenpeace and all the others who are trying to save the environment. Imagine that we continue living, consuming, and polluting like we do today. Then imagine a couple of years in the future, when sea levels have risen by several feet and thousands of species have become extinct. Imagine the day someone says, “Oh, darn, why didn’t I get that mountain bike instead of the monster truck?”

Please, I beg you all, think about tomorrow! There is always more than one option, but it is up to you to pick the right one. -Lina Koppel
