Now that the second installment of the Winter Arts Preview is safely stored on our server in .pdf format, The Independent‘s editorial and production teams can breathe a sigh of relief, and stop (but not for long!) to wonder at the fact that newspaper publishing was once done by hand. A new documentary film from Gary Hustwit-Helvetica, screening at Campbell Hall on February 6-explores the life and times of the original modern super-font, beloved by font geeks worldwide. The Swiss-born, sans serif typeface Helvetica says “urban culture” in as many languages as there are cities. In this image, Manfred Schulz sets traditional metal Helvetica by hand in Frankfurt, Germany.
