Spotlight on Women’s Portrayal in Media
California Women's Festival Discussion Planned for Feb. 6
The Santa Barbara Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications is showcasing the California Women’s Festival by hosting a discussion on February 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Maritime Museum. The discussion will cover the differences in gender and racial barriers in political leadership and will cover the portrayal of women in the media, and its impact on society. The discussion will be led by Gayle Binion and Susan Rose, both whom have devoted their lives to serving the well being of women, both in Santa Barbara and nationally.
Binion is a professor of political science at UCSB and also served as the chair of its Law & Society program. She has also served as Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union in Southern California. Rose has spent two terms as a member of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors and is a founding member of the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee and currently serves on the Santa Barbara Advisory Board of Human Rights Watch. Both speakers will be available for questions and discussion after the presentation.
Others who will be attending are the California Women’s Festival Director Patty de Dominic, who will be talking about the Festival’s vision and purpose, as well as an overview of the program and announcing the celebrity speakers.
