Donated Phones Bring Soldiers Closer To Home
Local Business Joins Nonprofit to Connect Troops With Families
The rapid advancements in cellular technology have created a surplus of obsolete cell phones, but Santa Barbara’s Handle With Care packaging store has found a solution that Is beneficial for all involved in their partnership with Cell Phones for Soldiers, a non-profit organization that sells phones to ReCellular, a company that recycles and resells phones and accessories. The program asks that people donate their old cell phones at Handle With Care store – located at 126 E. Haley Sreet, Suite A4 – so that store can then send the phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers, which will ultimately use the profits to purchase pre-paid phone cards that will be distributed to servicemen and women overseas. Cell Phones for Soldiers estimates that each phone is enough to buy about an hour’s worth of calling time. Since 2004 the organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed 400,000 prepaid calling cards to armed forces personnel.
