Recreational anglers have begun to ply the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary to allow artificial reefs to augment fish populations. Although artificial reefs have been used before-sometimes successfully-in Southern California, UCSB scientists and sanctuary officials stated that there are many factors determining the success of artificial reefs. Officials say their priority is in restoring the many natural reefs, some of which are not fully stocked with fish.
