The Director’s Chair
This Friday, January 23, Judy L. Larson will become the first holder of the R. Anthony Askew Chair at Westmont College’s Reynolds Gallery. Larson will be the second to be put in charge of the gallery, following former director Tony Askew’s retirement in 2008. An inauguration ceremony will be held in Murchison Gym at 10:30 a.m. and is open to the public.
Know Your Quakers!
Starting this month, the Quaker Meetinghouse (2012 Chapala St.) will be hosting free monthly screenings of Quaker-related classic films. The series kicks off next Friday, January 30, at 7 p.m. with Friendly Persuasion. The 1956 Oscar nominee revolves around an Indiana Quaker family who disagrees with their son’s decision to join the Civil War.
Shakespeare in Love
Santa Barbara author Helen Heightsman Gordon was named a finalist in the Best New Nonfiction category of USA Book News’ National Best Books 2008 Awards for her The Secret Love Story in Shakespeare’s Sonnets. The book, which posits links between Shakespeare and the secret societies of Freemasons and Rosicrucians, is available at Chaucer’s Books (3321 State St).
