Starting Wednesday, July 29, the Santa Barbara Farmers Market will do something it’s never done before: sell on the Westside of town. From 3 p.m. until dusk at Harding School-located at Mountain Avenue and West Valerio Street-all of the usual, delectable produce will be available from all the usual, wonderful producers. The folks at Harding School, while submitting a grant to the Fund for Santa Barbara, realized their annual Nutritional Decathlon would be even more effective if healthy eating went on beyond the classroom. Sadly, there was no Farmers Market on the Westside to make such eating easier. That’s all going to change now. “Simply, the Harding School Farmers Market is fundamentally good,” said Principal Sally Kingston. “It is good for Harding School families, neighbors, local growers, and our community as a whole. Mostly, it is good for our children to see the important adults in their lives and their community making positive and healthy choices. We know that modeling-teaching by doing-is highly effective. Children learn by watching what the important adults in their lives do. So, when our children see us come together for the Harding School Farmers Market, they will learn how much we care about ourselves and our community. My greatest hope is that they take that message forward.”
