One Structure Was Threatened
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department contained a small brushfire that broke out near Highway 101 and Tajiguas Creek south of Refugio Beach Thursday night, August 27.
A call of a brushfire came in at 9:53 p.m., and within an hour and a half the fire was contained to just under seven acres. County Fire responded in force to quickly get the fire under control. Though the temperature was still 90 degrees with 27 percent humidity at 11 p.m., the wind was blowing at only four to five miles per hour, leading to “pretty favorable conditions,” Captain David Sadecki said.
The winds pushed the fire, which was on the northside of Highway 101, toward the ocean. One structure on the west was threatened, but saved. There were no injuries and no evacuations. Highway 101 remained open through the incident.
Sadecki said crews remained on scene through the night, and that on-duty personnel was increased on Thursday because of the expected warm weather. The increased staffing may be continued through the weekend, he said.
