Bond Measuring
SBCC has changed Adult Education into Continuing Education, and the budget cuts have helped them toward their overall goal of systematically eliminating cultural classes geared toward seniors. Santa Barbara County Treasurer-Tax Collector Bernice James recently explained that seniors are able to opt out of Measures H and I taxes, annually, for the Santa Barbara School Districts. It would seem prudent that seniors would be able to opt out of the SBCC bond issue recently passed as Measure V. Senior citizens voted for this bond issue thinking they were supporting their Adult Education classes geared for them. Had seniors known SBCC’s plans, recently revealed at the October 27 meeting, prior to the vote, I am sure this bond issue would not have passed. I feel the voting, tax-paying senior citizens really got snookered, and do not support the programs currently proposed under the guise of Continuing Education. – Betty White
