Rural Sidewalks
I am writing in response to Terri Maher’s letter, [“Don’t Put Sidewalks in Montecito” [11/25/09]. Her opinion, unfortunately, is based on a misunderstanding. No urban sidewalk is proposed for San Ysidro Road. There will be no curb, gutter, or concrete. What’s proposed is a rural, landscaped path made of a natural surface, decomposed granite. The path will provide a safe place to walk for the children of Montecito Union School and for other people of all ages, including blind people like herself. Alas, Montecito has changed since the times that her children went to Montecito Union School. During the morning rush hour, San Ysidro Road today is a traffic-choked thoroughfare that is unsafe for anyone on foot. The proposed path will be safe, beautiful, and in keeping with the semi-rural character of Montecito. I am sure Terri Maher will love to walk it once it is built. – Eva Inbar
